With books, video games and random side projects I’ve been able to avoid the siren song of television for many years. That was until a year ago when someone told me about Nip/Tuck. Now I seem to be hooked on cable television show like Band of Brothers, The Wire, Spartacus, Dexter, True Blood, Californication and Mad Men .
My newest addiction, Rescue Me, focuses on the professional and personal lives of a group of New York City firefighters in the fictional Ladder 62 / Engine 99 firehouse.
The show mainly follows veteran firefighter Tommy Gavin, an ill-tempered alcoholic who is haunted by visions of his cousin and best friend, who died on September 11, 2001.
Can a single amazing performance elevate a mediocre film? If you answered yes then by all means go out and rent Precious. For everyone else, skip it and sleep soundly knowing that Mo’nique is an amazing actress that deserves the Oscar. Oh and before I forget, Mariah Carey can actually act.
Side Note
I’ve noticed that the Academy has a definite hard on for African Americans acting stereotypically “black”. Don’t believe me take a look at the list below.
Denzel Washington – Training Day
Dirty and murderous undercover police detective. Spends half the movie trying to kill his fellow white officer.
Jamie Foxx – Ray
A musician that murders the ivories.
Forest Whitaker – The Last King of Scotland
Crazed and murderous dictator that spends the whole movie murdering his fellow African Americans.
Mo’nique
A ghetto bitch mother that tries to kill her daughter with a television.
Cuba Gooding Jr. – Jerry Maguire
Football player that spends half the movie acting stereotypically blackand the other half murdering the fine craft of acting. Just kidding, I love Snow Dogs.
What better way to spend Easter Sunday than grilling meat on the BBQ and watching Christ’s murder’s in action. What?!
Let me explain, earlier in the week a friend mentioned he was watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand. A new television series about the Republic’s most infamous rebel, Spartacus.
Impressions
The first few episodes are so corny it hurts. With computer generated blood, bad dialogue and obscene amounts of nudity this series would probably turn off most audiences. But, somehow it grew on me and became this guilty pleasure I relished.
Spent the better half of my day reading reviews of the iPad and debating whether or not to pick one up for my parents. From what I’ve read and heard here is what I can discern.
Pros
Perfect for consuming media (music, movies, books, photos, games, etc.) and doing Internet related tasks such as surfing the web or writing / reading email.
Cons
It is a big fucking iPhone.
You still need a computer to back shit up, load photo library, etc.
First gen hardware is always bad news, especially when it cones from Apple. They have become the masters of planned obsolescence and early adopter rapists.
The weather was so perfect I decided to skip the gym and meet up with Kelly and the gang for drinks at this aptly named German beer garden, Hallo Berlin. Four drinks and a shot later I was up performing Mr. Brightside by The Killers. Yet another reason i should not be allowed to go near a karaoke bar.
Note: For some reason I continue to refer to the place as Hello Bear. What is wrong with me?
A charming biopic that explores the life and rebellious style of a now modern icon. Totally worth renting.
My Secret Crush Ever since I laid eyes on her in Amelia I fell in love. Saying I have a massive crush on Audrey Tauou would be an understatement. I openly admit she isn’t my type but something about her just makes me lose my shit.
Costume Design Having a genuine interest in all things film related I decided to do a little research and came across a blog post on Fashion in Motion, discussing the films costume design. A definite must read for anyone interested in costume design or fashion in general.
It seems creator Kenichi Tanaka has taken down the video. I suspect it was partly due to all the negative and unwarranted feedback he received. Sad I could no longer share it with you guys I did a little digging and found a copy. Not sure how long it would remain online, I decided to screen grab it and post a copy on my server. Enjoy.
A documentary examining the goings-on behind the porn film that grew to become an icon, Deep Throat. Considering it ignited a sexual and social revolution you would think the film would try harder to explore the cultural ramifications.
Like a good blow job this documentary lacks teeth and sadly in this case that’s a bad thing.
Fed up with the slew of pretentious food blogs? Try Downtown Gourmand, written by a personal friend of mine, her blog is a down and dirty account of eating and drinking in New York.
