As Seen on TV

April 30, 2009 General Comments

I have a deep distrust of all products sold via infomercial. For years products like The Ginsu knife, Juiceman Juicer and the Magic Bullet  have played on my desire, as a man, to chop grind  and mince.  Thankfully I’ve resisted any urge to spend my hard earned cash, till now.

Normally if a product sold in an infomercial makes it onto store shelves I start to think it must work. Right?

Below is a list of products I’ve purchased using this logic and can say with the utmost confidence, they work as advertised.

Perfect Pushup
Designed by a Navy Seal. C’mon it has to work.

Iron Gym
As a pullup bar that installs easily in your door frame it works perfectly. Oddly enough the product isn’t made from iron.

ShamWow
A towel that holds 12x it’s weight in liquid. I am happy to report it works as advertised. Skeptical, I ran home and spilled liquids everywhere just so I could test its claim.

Oxiclean
Works wonders.

Streaming

April 29, 2009 Technology, Video Games Comments

Part of the coolness factor with owning an Xbox 360 and PS3 are the media capabilities they posses. Both can stream media from any PC running  the Windows operating system but not OS X. Since I’ve made the switch to my MacBook Pro I’ve begun to miss the streaming capabilities.

Determined to stream my movies, music and pictures I decided to pick up copies of

Your Xbox 360 is capable of playing back your music and videos and viewing your digital photos. With Connect360, your Mac’s ready to share.

Connect360 automatically indexes your iTunes and iPhoto libraries and shares them to your Xbox 360. You can then use the Xbox 360 Dashboard to browse and play your media, organized in the exact same way that it is on your Mac.

Your PlayStation 3 has been craving the media on your Mac. Finally, complete Macintosh and Playstation 3 integration is upon us.

Enjoying your media through the PlayStation 3 has never been this easy, on any platform — and the Mac isn’t just any platform. Its our favorite platform, so we’ve taken great care to create a seamless solution.

Red Belt

Your typical cliched exploration of honor through martial arts. I was hoping David Mamet would inject something new but instead he gives us a convulted plot. By no means is this film bad, it’s just not what I expected from such an extraordinary writer.

Australia

I wanted to enjoy this film but the hodgepodge of ideas and themes culminate into an unfocused and unbalanced film. Other annoyances were the use of Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz. An original song would have been a better choice.

I expected more from Baz Luhrmann, director of Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge.

A Random Spring Saturday

April 25, 2009 Food Comments

Brunch at Cafe Bar, a visit to the Museum of the Moving Image and a few pitchers at the Astoria Beer Garden were the order of the day.  Sadly I’m a functional illiterate and misread the hours of operation for the museum.  That just meant more time at the Beer Garden.

Not content with being slightly buzzed to I continued drinking and dance off the empty calories at the Sullivan Room.

G.I. Joe: Resolute

Came across the G.I. Joe animated mini-series (seems like a reboot) the other day and figured I would share. Click here to check out the full 11 episodes, free!

Script Editor

April 23, 2009 Technology Comments

Today was my first time using script editor on the Mac and damn was I impressed.  While blogging at home I often have to wait to scale images down at work since I have yet to buy a copy of Adobe Photoshop for my laptop.  Not willing to wait I ran a quick search for “Mac re-size” in Google and came across a simple script.

It being my first time using the script editor I was nervous and excited.  The end result was a fully functioning script that does batch image resizing.  Have I mention how much I love my MAC?

Monsters vs Aliens

April 22, 2009 Movies Comments

It seems I now have a 3D animated cartoon movie buddy in Ada.  Last time we hung out we saw Coraline and tonight we watched Monsters vs Aliens.  Having seen the trailers I wasn’t very thrilled but it turned out to be really cute.  Some of the jokes fall flat but the stunning 3D and corny factor made it enjoyable.

Sounds of the Universe

April 21, 2009 Music Comments

The only thing better than Christmas is the day a new Depeche Mode album is released.  During lunch I ran (literally) to the Virgin Megastore to pick up my copy. DM is back and they sound amazing, the best album they’ve put out in years.
